"We differ, blind and seeing,
not in the nature of our handicap,

but in the understanding and idealism
we put into the art of living.

It is only when we put imagination
and feeling behind the senses

that they attain their full value."

-Helen Keller

What is C-Print®?

Here is a person using ASL to describe real-time captioning:

"What is C-Print®?"

************************
C-Print® captioning is an accommodation available to help people participate and benefit more completely in a hearing environment. Advances in technology and accessibility are allowing C-Print® to improve access to necessary information for people who have a variety of needs in many different situations.

A C-Print® captionist listens and uses a laptop to type all spoken information that is heard and to type indicators of tone and/or action in the room to facilitate interaction with the course and other participants in real time.

People receiving captioning services can read everything that is said or that happens in the room as it occurs.  There may be a slight lag for the information to first be experienced by the captionist and transcribed.

Captioning allows the client to be an active participant in a group setting and to receive equal access to the same information as other people in the room. A transcript file is generated at the same time. The transcript can be used in many ways in real time or after the event.  Notes can be taken on the transcript file itself as it scrolls on the client's laptop.  Sticky notes can be used.  Font, colors and formatting can be customized.  The transcript can even used with audio or tactile readers for users with visual challenges.

People who enjoy the opportunities provided by
C-Print® may identify themselves as deaf, hard-of-hearing, "hearing-impaired", ESL, or have many other challenges for which captioning is an appropriate accommodation.  Some people have more than one need that is met by C-Print® captioning. Some of them may have learning challenges, visual difficulties, physical or mental challenges, or a variety of special needs in a hearing environment.

Yes, even hearing people utilize C-Print® as an accommodation!
