"...C-Print® program provides a foundation in Deaf studies as well as specialized workforce skills. C-Print® is a computerized notetaking system developed at the National Technical Institute of the Deaf and is widely used in educational settings. Students in this option are prepared to work upon graduation as an entry-level freelance C-Print® captionist." (Source: http://www.universities.com/edu/Associate_degree_in_Deaf_Studies_CPrint®_at_Bristol_Community_College.html)
(Note: I hesitate to refer to experienced C-Print® captioning as "note-taking". You may see some people refer to it as note-taking. Advanced captionists type 100 wpm+, use 50% or more abbreviations, and may be able to caption verbatim in real-time. ~See Print Moderator)

Transcript tips:
NOTE: Transcript tips were provided by a colleague. If you practice captioning a film or video, you can often find the scripts to compare to your efforts. You can also scroll the actual scripts (with scene changes and sound effects included) on a screen for a client . ~See Print Moderator

Here are some links to transcript sites (Links Updated: 8/20/2011):
Nova Programs- "This is one of the websites for PBS's Nova program. The neat thing about this is that for many of the programs available to watch online, you can turn captions on thru the website. If a professor taped their copy of a program off TV and you can't turn the captions on, they can show the program from the website instead and captions are no longer a problem. If that doesn't work (not all the Nova episodes are available w/captions online), you can go here: PBS Nova Transcripts for complete transcripts of everything they've ever aired." ~A. D.
"PBS Frontline has something very similar to the Nova site." ~A. D.
PBS Frontline transcripts: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/gsearch.html?x=0&y=0&q=transcripts
"MSNBC has transcripts of some of their news shows." ~A. D.
"EBSCO Newspaper Source has transcripts of CBS 60 Minutes, and Face the Nation, among other things, and if your school subscribes (a lot do) you get them free :). My school doesn't subscribe, so I can't vouch for quality or ease of use, but it's probably pretty complete. You'd find that through the school library search database (or possibly the local library in your area)." ~A. D.
"Lexis-Nexis has some transcripts of news shows as well; go to "Guided Search" and choose "News Transcripts" as your news category, choose "all transcripts" for your source, and then search by show. I found transcripts for 60 Minutes (CBS), 20/20 and Nightline (both ABC); I'm sure there are others." ~A. D.
"Finally, for movies and TV shows that aren't news, you can go to Open Subtitles. I used this resource when a professor decided to show part of the movie Amistad. It was far better then I could have done, since a lot of the content was either sound effects or people speaking in other languages, sometimes without captions even on screen -- the subtitle file let the student see what would have been in the on-screen captions. When you download from this website you'll get your files in .srt format -- these can be opened in any text editor or word processing program, and the file will read something like this (this is a clip from Amistad)..." ~A. D.

Audio Files for Practice:
NOTE: If you use Windows Media Player to play audio, there is a variable speed control which allows you to practice an audio at slow speeds to concentrate on adding new abbreviations, then practice at faster speeds as you improve.
Open Windows Media Player, click "View," "Enhancements," "Play Speed Settings." This will open the Play Speed Settings controls. You can then click "Slow," "Normal," or "Fast", or you can drag the slider bar to adjust the speed.
If you Google "variable speed player," you can find other variable speed players with various features.
I compiled a list of audio file links for practice when I was training. It's been a while since I used these links. Please let me know if a link is no longer current. Meanwhile, they may be of use to a "cap" in training. Enjoy!
